Mac OS X Lion Supports TRIM for SSD’s

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will support the TRIM function for SSD’s, this should significantly boost the lifespan and performance of SSD drives. Hints for support were first discovered last year by Anandtech, but now HardMac has confirmed that support is included in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview.
TRIM is important because it allows the operating system to notify an SSD which blocks of data are no longer in use on the drive, allowing them to be wiped and written over more efficiently. Without TRIM, an SSD drive can become gradually slower over time as blocks that were once in use become slower to write new data over.

Transfer Default MySQL Database Directory From /var To /usr

Default partition size for /var normally not enough to store databases, so we need to store it somewhere bigger (/usr). The steps will show how to transfer database from /var/db/mysql (default path installation for MySQL in FreeBSD) to /usr/local/mysql/data (suggested path). Steps as follows :-

[root@dev /var/db/mysql]# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server stop
Stopping mysql.
Waiting for PIDS: 993.
[root@dev /var/db/mysql]# mkdir -p /usr/local/mysql/data
[root@dev /var/db/mysql]# mv * /usr/local/mysql/data/.
[root@dev /var/db/mysql]# cd ../
[root@dev /var/db]# rm -rf mysql
[root@dev /var/db]# ln -s /usr/local/mysql/data mysql
[root@dev /var/db]# chown -R mysql mysql
[root@dev /var/db]# chgrp -R mysql mysql
[root@dev /var/db]# cd /usr/local/
[root@dev /usr/local]# chown -R mysql mysql
[root@dev /usr/local]# chgrp -R mysql mysql
[root@dev /usr/local]# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server start
Starting mysql.
[root@dev /usr/local]# ps aux | grep mysql
mysql    46491  0.1  1.1 208112 44860  ??  S     6:15AM   0:00.09 [mysqld]

#TopSecretProject – Twitter Alert for Waktu Solat

Memperkenalkan the so-called #TopSecretProject lah. It’s actually a tweet alert which’ll send out tweets bila dah masuk waktu solat fardhu on daily basis. Data waktu solat fetched from JAKIM’s website http://www.e-solat.gov.my/.
It’s actually a simple PHP script connected to Twitter via OAuth, it’ll do a simple checking of current time against the data stored in MySQL database. In order to identify whether the current time is Subuh, Zuhur, etc, I did a checking based on range of time for each sets of solat fardhu using function CheckTime() written by Patrick H. (patrickh@gmail.com). Function can be found at his personal blog.

The idea is to setup twitter alerts for major towns in Malaysia. For now, I’ve started creating 5 twitter accounts to cover Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Ipoh, Pulau Pinang, & Kuantan. From time to time, I’ll be adding the other areas as well.

Below is the list of covered areas (striked-through) & to be covered.

Feedbacks are welcomed.

  1. WP Kuala Lumpur
  2. Melaka
  3. Ipoh
  4. Pulau Pinang
  5. Kuantan
  6. Kuala Terengganu
  7. Kota Kinabalu
  8. Perlis
  9. Johor Bahru
  10. Kota Bharu
  11. Alor Setar
  12. Kuching
  13. Labuan
  14. Seremban
